I know the shots are fairly similar but I was rushed for time and only took a few. The building is beautiful inside and out, i will have to go another time to get nicer shots of it. Enjoy!

I'm going to go ahead and guess that in #1 the building lights are too distracting + picture is dark at the bottom, #2 crop is ugly, #3 the bottom is too dark again, and overall the subject is unclear?

I don't have any lighting equipment and when I tried using the flash on my camera it really lit up the ground right in front of me..

put your camera on a tripod,
    meter off the car,
    open shutter with cable/remote release
    ???
    profit.

building looks great. too bad there was some dark thing in front of it fucking up the shot.

In that scene, he can't meter off the car since he doesn't have ANY lighting equipment. The background will be a glowing block. :mamoru::mamoru:

Basically SOL w/ that scene without any lights.

I'm going to venture a guess and say that you're using the Average metering mode. What that does is reads the light that's coming in from the entirety of the field of view, and adjusting accordingly to get the best exposure for the photo as a whole, not necessarily your subject. With the headlights on, and the lights of the building behind the car, that made the camera think the area was brighter than it really was.

if you change to center weighted, or spot metering, aim at the car, and hit the exposure lock (looks like an asterisk) button, the camera will choose settings to properly expose your subject, and then just recompose and take your pic. However, with a scene like this set, that will result in the lights of the building being blown out.

Building is awesome. I can't figure out what is in focus in #2. As everyone said, the lighting on the car is the problem. Unfortunately, I can't give you a solution :hs: I haven't shot this kind of stuff before.

That's the Richmond Olympic Oval where the 2010 Winter Olympics for speed skating will be held.

You could've tried turning the car 90 degrees and shooting it from the side so you could get both the building and the lit side of the car in the shot. Not sure how that'd look without being there and knowing what other stuff you had around you though.
