If I own a LCD HDTV that can play 720p and 1080i am I going to suffer when I watch blu-ray movies that are supposedly in 1080p? or will the TV adjust accordingly?

Since your tv can't display 1080p it will display 1080i, i prefer 720p to that however...

You won't "suffer". But you won't get the "full" res out of the disc without a 1080p set.(One that will accept 1080p and not just display a signal natively at that.)
