ok, so the company has been talking about getting some blackberry handhelds for the sales team...I've been reading up and so far the main ways I see them being connected are :

-email forwarding / retreival using a pop3 account
    -Blackberry desktop manager
    -BES

so the fact is that the email forwarding option sucks cause their calendars wont be sync'ed, and email duplication

desktop manager, they need to sync all the time, kind of a PITA if they're on the road, but it's a decent solution, esp since it costs 0$

and BES...now is that something that is purchased through the provider or something we have to buy from blackberry themself?

is there any other ways I am missing?

    any suggestions?

I have not used blackberry myself, but through random things I've seen, I recall special integration services being provided by the carriers (such as Sprint)

BES is where's it's at. There's two flavours - small business up to 15 users, and often that is given away by the carriers, and the enterprise version - unlimited.

I would definately try to keep BES on its own server though - it has some issues. What email system are you using now? Exchange?

You can start by making sure Exchange is fully patched.

A couple of our employees have Blackberrys, but we've had zero luck getting them to work properly with our Exchange server. That said, they have yet to let me try to make it work, so past failures could just be due to ineptitude.

EDIT: I wasn't really trying to kiss my own ass, it just sounds that way.

Gotta read the whole manual dude. Its a bear and as I said, recommend using an empty server because of it.

We don't use BES at our company (which is obnoxious, given we have 20K+ users/employees, and over 300 have BB's)..

We setup the blackberries through OWA/internet mail config option (at least available with Tmo?). It's flawless for mail, but doesn't sync calendar or contacts. The users use local syncing via USB for that..

Lol - who is the dumbass who decided they didn't want to invest the money in a BES server?

I have had great success running BES w/ exchange. The toughest challenge was doing a knife edge cutover from one server to a new box and even that was cake.

k cool thanks for the replies, this is the 2nd time this issue comes up and i'll be sure to try and force the BES ways on the people in charge, cause it's clearly the best solution :bigthumb:

I'm so glad I don't own one. I'd never be able to leave my work alone if I did.

Meh - you get used to balancing it out. Gives me something to do in lines and it's awesome for getting a quick overview of any issues first thing in the morning.
