iPhone all the way. The iPhone keyboard takes time, but it's probably easier than the BB Pearl's retarded mess of one.

It all depends on what you're going to use it for.
    Email, documents, phone calls... Pearl
Web surf, music, look cool... iPhone

I've got the iPhone and it's perfect for me since I run an ecommerce website and need the full web at my finger tip. But I think's fairly limited as a mobile phone and office on the go type of environment. And you don't get the tactile feedback on the iPhone when pressing a button on the screen as you would when pressing a button on the keyboard with the pearl.

What you get with the Pearl today is exactly what you'll have 2 years from now.
The iPhone is basically a small mobile mac pc, so apple will be doing several software updates over the next few years.
One of the largest cons, no third party apps for iPhone, is being worked on right now. Apple is releasing a SDK fairly soon with approval processes to allow the application on the iPhone.

What in the world does this mean? It is a cellphone and it makes phone calls perfectly. I own the iPhone and wouldn't trade it for anything. The typing of the iPhone gets easy once you start to trust the auto-correct feature of the keyboard. The full internet and iPod features are impossible to beat and once Apple releases the phone for 3rd party programs, I think in February, it is going to be unstoppable.

It's a DATA device that operates on decade-old technology.

    No EVDO no mother-fucking care.

You "need" it? What did you do before you had your iPhone?

It's not the perfect cell phone for making calls. When driving, you have no tactile feedback for where to find the answer call button. You have to look at the screen. No voice dial. On other phones, you can hold and press 2 to dial your home for example... you can feel where the #2 button is. On the iphone, you've got to unlock your phone, get to your favorites, scroll to it, and make sure you press it just right, all while looking at it...
Don't get me wrong, I love the phone. But it's not perfect. It's got hundreds of little other faults too, but it has things that other phones should have, like visual voicemail, handling multiple calls, etc.

I had to rely on a laptop or desktop. Now I can be out with friends and family and if I need to, I can check on any outstanding issues for our online business.

out of all devices i've used, suretype > sidekick keyboard > mogul > touch > *

haven't used an iphone much, but to call the suretype a "retarded mess of one" is just plain ridiculous

I have a Pearl and I love it. My friends have iPhones and they love it. I believe the data plan for the iPhone is fairly expensive if that matters to you.

Which is better is probably more subjective with the two phones you picked than anything else. Web access and music has got to be much better on the iPhone, but I don't think I could use a phone with no buttons.

The iphone plan is expensive? Wouldn't the Pearl require one of those BB only plans, which cost a ton?

I have a BB 8830 on the sprint sero plan, so it's sorta crippled but I use Opera anyways. I wouldn't get it if I had to the pay the extra BB data service. I tried out an Iphone which was neat but the AT*t service around here was shitty.
