Couple of questions for GI crew..

    1. how often do you wash your belt? I wash my gi after every class but I never wash my belt.. Should I?

    2. when you are in closed guard and you're to open up.. what's the best grip to use? should I be gripping sleeves and go into spider guard? should I try to grab sleeve and collar? also should I be putting both my feet on hips? or one on hip and one on bicep or something?

    Thanks.

    1. I never wash my belt.
    2. I always try to control the wrists. Can't sub me if you can't do what you want with your hands.

If his got shitty posture, triangle him.

BJJ is about initiative, Take the initivative to open your guard before he does it for you. Its better to open your guard on your terms rather than his.

As soon as i open my guard i almost go straight for de la riva and throw about 3-4 sweeps his way before going for some subs or transitioning to something else.

Find out what open guard you want to play or are good with and open your guard so it sets you up for that position. On advice to do that talk to your coach

    1. i never wash my belt
    2. i try to get sleeve control, one foot on bicep the other on the hip etc. looking for sweeps from there, i'll go for the scissor sweep, if he leaves the opening i'll go for collar choke. If the choke is tight they forget about passing and i can usually get back to guard

    1) Never wash your belt, you're gonna wash all the good juju away.
    2) I control a cross lapel and the end of the sleeve on the same side, feet in the hips and straighten them out. But remember jiu jitsu is different for everyone. Try it all and see what works for you.

people getting injured when training with a temp belt and so on..

yea trying different things.. i think im just getting used to rolling with people that have different styles

    1) I've washed my belt a few times, no more than 3 times ever. I did run it in the drier when I first got it though.

    2) I start feet on hips, knees in biceps with wrist control.0

Never Wash. I know some guys with the weirdest color belts because they washed it (mainly blue). My belt is turning pretty brown/dirty

I play the sleeve/collar grip, but it always varies.

What if he's already standing up and I'm in a bad position.. If I go for Triangle I have to extend so far up that he can just easily stack me from that position.. Should I be working my grips before any of this happens?

Yes, you need to be a lot more proactive and a lot less reactive. Make them play your game. Always responding to stuff their doing is a lot harder than playing your game and making them respond.

if they are standing you gotta play de la riva. Not my best game but I'm startin to learn stuff.

It would be way to complex to explain in txt

I really need to learn that. Seems like everyone and their moms likes to use the standing guard pass at my school.

i kinda understand the basics.. but wouldnt be able to sweep or anything.. is x guard to complex for me to think about at this point from that position?

i really want cobrinha's instructional dvds.. they have a section for de la riva guard.

Don't even think about x guard for a while yet. De la riva guard is easy to get a hold of and there are some easy basic high % sweeps from it.

And if they sit down in your de la riva guard and you cant sweep them you = fail.

    Or ask you instructor

i play relson's gi game so i immediately get 4 in the collar and attack with the cross collar choke, then since they have to defend that by pushing your bicep you can grab the seam on the back of the arm above the elbow. then start threatening sweeps or other chokes and go from there.

as stated tho you gotta find the game that works best for you.

I have never felt very comfortable or like I have good control with that guard at all, even with both sleeves controlled. :dunno: I guess I need more time using it.

Yeah its a really nice guard to throw a few sweeps in a row at your opponent. If they are not ready for it you will easily sweep them.

Just be careful if you rip your grips to fast he might come up with you and stand up and get the single leg to take you down again
