I know when I am want this kind of look I expose a shot or two of the background the way I want to get my setting, then adjust my flash for the light I want on the model. If I can't get the key light the way I want then I will adjust with my aperture and then compensate with the shutter.

    Great set of photos here.

line of sight? Does the body you have trigger the flash without the on-board flash firing?

with NIkon you can turn the flash off so you don't get any in the shot in the master settings.
