Do any of you FN'ers ride your bike to work, or school for that matter?

In reality I'm not asking if its a one mile round trip, I am wondering if anyone rides their bike to and from somewhere everyday, that is quite a long trip...maybe 15 miles or so?

Do you guys think this would be too much to ride everyday to and from work? I don't ride a bike for long distance, so I am almost clueless to the things that go into this, and how hard it would be...

    Can anyone school me?

I will ride to work sometimes, its kind of dangerous to make it. Its like a 25 mile round trip, not too bad. I will make bank and grocery store runs on the bike, and those are 10 mile round trips. But, I do long distance rides, 50+ miles and average about 150 - 200 miles a week plus longer metrics on the weekend. Best thing to do is test your tolerance. Make the rides you want when you have some free time and time is not a factor so you can judge your speed and how you will feel after you make it. I can make it to work in about 35 minutes and its about 12.5 miles, with some hills and traffic.

With it going into super hot months, you have to factor in time to "clean up" after you ride, if you need to. Shower, D.O. for your B.O., etc. If your going to work, changing clothes if needed.

Honestly, I would start doing your errands first and go from there.

    i
bike 2.5km each way to and from work, always get my groceries via bike which can rand from 1-4km each way.

going to kick boxing and soccer, even on go out and party nights, i bike 6-10km each way. its entertaining seeing my gf crash face first into the bushes after drinking sangria ...

but yea i have deodorant at work cause i liek to feel clean when i come in. cold / rainy days suck, i need to remember to buy a full rain suit

Motorcycle yes. It used to cost 5 - 8 bucks to fill the tank, now it's 18. Cheap compared to a car but even motorcycles are costing alot more. I went from 20.00 a month to drive to 72.00+. Might as well use the 186.00 a month train pass I have to buy every month.....pork pork pork

How long did it take you to work up to that pace? That must be at least averaging 25mph (I had trouble averaging 15mph on my mountain bike with mainly flat terrain and no traffic - bike path - when I used to ride often) through hills and traffic...How long does it take you to get home from work?

Do you have many dedicated bike lanes on your commute?

Im not 100% sure on the average speed, but its probably a little less than that. There is one hill I can hit 40+ mph down it and coast for a while. I've been "cycling" for about a year and a half now. I'm on a road bike, which is geared a lot better than a mountain bike. There is no dedicated bike lanes on my work commute :wtc:. Some times I will take a longer rider 30 - 40 miles on the way home, just to get a workout in. If not its about 35 - 40 minutes, depending on which way I go home. There is really only 1 safe ride into work, on the way home I have 2 or 3 options that are relatively safe at that time of day.

I'm spending most of my time in the Road Cycling and SS/FG forums. I just got my first road bike.

I'm emailing this to the guys I ride with right now. :eek3:

I just started riding on the road and with my bike I'm averaging 16-18 mph. You'll be surprised at how much easier it is to ride quickly with a real road bike. I think you're doing pretty good averaging 15mph on a mtn bike though!
