like the title says, i'm looking for a windows photo gallery alternative. one that is simple and has minimal buttons/frame. if you've ever expanded the photo viewer on the sidebar, that's the kind i want. it's also similar to the one used on a mac.

    is there one available?

I've been using a really old version of ACDSee, back since Win95/98, version 2.43 because I just never cared for the newer versions which have gotten too bloated.
Irfanview can do this as well.

Neither can do all of the features that iPhoto on the Mac can do. But in both you have a thumbnail view of the images in the select folder and you can move images to other folders, both have a renaming system for batch renaming. Irfanview can so do a lot of other batch things like resizing, cropping and changing file type.
