Does anyone have any advice on starting up a forum and converting the hits to posters? The forum is targeted at college students. Here's what's been done so far.

    Flyers at local colleges
    Adwords
    Paid advertising on offtopic.com
    myspace page with 330 members
posting on various other college forums
Responding to college news blogs with link
Adding new content to our forum on a regular basis.
Giving away a digital camera to whoever can refer the most members (contest ended with two referrals :wtc:)

A few other details. The site is about 6 months old, gets 100-200 uniques a day and has about 115 members.

Sounds like a cool idea; can you provide a link?

    Sure, the site is http://www.collegecolosseum.com

I just didn't want to link it right away so people didn't think I was spamming.

    Ding ding ding.

Also, on your homepage where the news is - under each post, put a link like "discuss this topic in the forums!" or something.

You also have wayyyy too many forums for the amount of posts you have. I personally wouldn't join & post because it looks like it'd be a yawn fest - trick people into thinking there's activity by condensing the amount of forum categories.

Your advertising will be fruitless if the site looks dead to people.. so first thing should be either get activity, or make it seem as though you've got a lot of activity.

I like the suggestion about "discuss this topic in the forums." It is an RSS feed so I may take some playing around to get that to work.

Also, any suggestions on how to effectively start drama? I don't want to turn off the few members we already have.
