I have a site which caters to only a specific area. Whats the best way to build links and help promote my site?

    So far I have:
    Advertised on Facebook
    Put links on topix
Left comments for very small local blogs

Its a niche based social network/news site catering to a certian region. I'll use the Outer Banks as an example. So its all people who live/work in the outer banks. It has all the basic social networking features, pictures, messaging, etc. as well as News, weather, movie times, for the Outer Banks.

like i said look for other similiar forums in the area, and even do a search on yahoo groups, used them in the past for porn sites and got some decent traffic from them, and i know they have a shitload of none porn groups catering to people in the same area, same hobbies and what not, 5 seconds to join and post a link in their link section and maybe an intro post, may get you some traffic

I thought that Yahoo groups were mostly filled with Spam. My only concern is that I would post a link and all of sudden get 100's of hits from China, posting links to ebooks, and discount sneakers.

You in school? If so see if they have a board where people can post flyer's and shit. Post offices would be a good place if they allow people to post things up(mine does), as would grocery stores, etc that have the little board at the entrance.

Maybe a sticker or two to put on your ride:dunno:

do your research, look at the recent posts, you can tell the spam on yahoo groups and what is a legit group

if it is filled with posts about viagra and other shit like that, then stay away, but there are a lot of legit yahoo groups out there and they do work in getting you traffic, personally i try all types of ways to get traffic, that way i am not running out of opportunities

Actually, one thing I did end up doing is making business cards with the logo and site domain (simple and to the point) and would drop them around the clubs/bars/etc.

What ended up happening was that a competing website (who was also at these venues) would pick them up and take them. I stopped doing that because it seemed like I was just throwing away money.

I'll check more into the yahoo groups. I just did a quick search and the largest one is only 26 members....

make sure you search for everything possible, yahoo groups don't use tags, so in order to find shit, you have to search for every possibility

We have a monthly community magazine. Works decently for a publication with only 30,000 subscribers.
