I know it's probably been asked many times but here goes my story

i just finished first year of Computer science.. Did a great deal of Java, and some C and Unix. I'm good with computers in general. And this summer i decided to learn web design in hopes of making some money on the side to support me through university

I started with the HTML/CSS book written by the guys from HTMLDog.. It's good, i got up to chapter 5 or so(there are 12 of them) The lessons are integrated with CSS... So first they show you how to put a text then how to style it with CSS.. I think it's a good book, but i was hoping to find a book that gives you exercises to do and so on like a textbook.. So you can practice it...

Anyways i'm gonna keep reading this book, and finish it, But what other ways can i learn web design...

Also another question is can i still be a web designer if i can't draw anything to save my life... I'm creative but i can't draw...

html seems very easy, CSS kinda gets confusing...

i dont think it's hard at all, but it comes with a ton of tags that would be hard to remember..

Im just asking about the best way to go about learning web design

It is confusing because browsers differ, and most of it requires stupid little hacks to make shit work.

You'll find it a LOT easier to work off web-based teachings, where you can copy/paste/attempt/edit/etc..

Books are good for reference of stuff you already know, or reading up on theory.. imo.

    http://www.w3schools.com/
    http://net.tutsplus.com/

    etc etc

A lot easier but I found doing the online work only made it easier for me a cut/paste everything. When I got a book and started writing everything by hand into notepad+ I found I retained a lot more of it.

Then again it is probably a personal thing as I have seen others say the same thing in the past.

    :hsugh:

Markup isn't the same as programming. There's a brain split in there. I know unbelievable programmers that have built systems you couldn't bother to comprehend that couldn't write markup if their life depended on it.

CSS is easy. you can style just about any html tag, css class, or css id. an id can only be used once per page. classes can be used multiple times.

specificity can be tricky, but you hardly need to understand that to get started.

any problems you're having with CSS are probably because of your browser. Use Firefox or Chrome.

I actually make a personal point of re-writing code when reading a tutorial, because I agree with your point that copy/pasting != absorption into the brain. Each to their own though :)

Over a decade ago when tables were the shit, I learned by viewing the source of what I thought was a badass website, then opened up notepad next to it, and typed the source of the website into it to see what everything did. In about a month I had memorized every tag used in HTML and knew what they did.

I actually never got into the technicals and theory of stuff until I learned semantic HTML.

Interesting idea, I think I might actually try that out sometime soon.

Notepad? Keep the .html file open in Firefox as a preview... F5 after you save the html file in Notepad to see changes.

When you're first learning it can seem complicated. But it'll click and you'll realize how easy everything actually is.
