I've got a ton of 720p and 1080p stuff and have always used VLC to play it.

Is there a better program out there to use? I'd like to find one that can make use of my 8800gtx instead of just cpu power.

CCCP is your best "codec pack" around comes with MPC which is by far better than VLC for ease of use.

CoreCodec's CoreAVC is what you want for HD playback, however.

Install CCCP, let MPC take over all your file associations, and install CoreAVC. You'll be able to play 99% of things out there without any problems. Hell, CoreAVC is so goddamned efficient that I was able to play 1080P Battlestar Galactica in all of it's grainy goodness on a Pentium 4 with a ATI Mobility Radeon 9800. It's THAT good.

Edit: Keep VLC around, however, just in case something doesn't play right. VLC is useful for it's internal codecs.

The 8800gtx doesn't have the hardware to assist decoding of h264 or vc1.

That's one of those things I haven't payed attention to, but I'm surprised to hear.

You would think that would be on all cards by now.

With COREavc, the only player that has worked for me is KMplayer. Flawless playback.
