Any guides on SEO you guys can point me to? I need to optimize a site for a manufacturer of "high quality boxer shorts" $30+ dollars/piece. No shopping cart, just linking to vendors that sell them. The other site is for a local painter. they're both just plain css, with a bit of flash (header and such). Any guide that could explain it from the ground up would be great

From the ground up is pretty difficult, and you most likely won't see immediate results!

A few things you need to use

    Google webmaster tools

    analytics.google.com

    http://www.sitemaps.org/

A few places I would visit

    http://www.dnseo.net/

    http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/internet/google-ranking-factors.htm

if you search SEO here, you will find a lot of good writeups.. but the layout to follow is

    meta tags (keywords and descriptions)

CONTENT (good quality content designed around your keywords)

Bolded, headers and keywords in content

    sitemap

    robots.txt

    and GOOD ORIGINAL CONTENT

I've also added this to my meta tags, and noticed a bit of a difference..

    <meta name="googlebot" content="index, follow" />

Everyone says that you should submit your sites and forget them for 6 months, some I have seen results for in a few days, others are not even indexed yet... I couldn't tell you why...

I wish there was a better answer than original good content and quality back links but eventually if you're going to do it right that's what it boils down to. There are many on page factors that go into getting something ranked really well but for starters you just need to start adding content and getting links.

I dont think it should take 6 months. Google loves blogs and they get indexed fairly quickly so start a blog for the sites www.domain(dot)com/blog with wordpress or something and it should induce getting spidered much quicker.

I agree with the guys above...quality content will do the work for you.

But doesn't mean you can't help it along by making sure the elements of the site are setup the best way possible.

There is plenty of free info that is good but if you want the most comprehensive "guide" then it would have to be seobook. Not sure if you are looking to spend money though.
