Like the thread says Im begining to gain interest in long range shooting, I already own a .308, 22-250, 30-30, Im just wanting to know what the best long range round is.

I am thinking 7mm Mag is probably going to be the best. BUT I want other opinions.

.50 cal is worthless for accurate long range shooting

if you want a common cartridge, my vote would be for the .308....if you wanna try something a lil more exotic, ive heard that the .338 Lapua is an outstanding round for long range accuracy.
    p.s.
you ARE aware that many a title have been won at army marksmanship competitions with 5.56 right?
i believe ive even seen marines shoot at 600 yards with irons

Seems to do pretty good for snipers and 50cal shooting matches :)

Yes im aware of it, and I know the army marksmanship team uses .338 lapua as well. Im not into exotic loads yet maybe in the future ill give it a try but for right now I want to stay with stuff easily accesible in the gun shop. Maybe in the future when and if I get super hardcore ill try something exotic like the .338

@ 500 meters it has like 2 - 3 inch groups. While it it is an amazing round it was never designed for precision shooting. a 3 inch group is just fine with a .50 cal rifle because they are generally not shooting at anything smaller than a com box or truck/tank

7mm stw would work good along with other magnum calibers. Second long range shooting is not something you just jump right into. You better gather information before you drop lots of money on stuff. I'd talk with someone who is active in it. Glass is also going to be important, don't buy a nice gun and put a turd scope on it.

Naw man a $40 Barska from Sportman's Guide is all you need :hsugh: If you're sticking with factory loaded catridges you're going to be severely limited in both choice and potential, a .308 with loads from shops such as Black Hills would be a good choice.

Since you're not reloading, I'd stick with a .308 since it's one of the few chamberings that you can actually buy match ammuntion in. But if you're really serious, I'd start reloading as it opens up a whole new level accurate, long rang cartridges.

Check out the new barret 416 it still super sonic at 2500 meters. So I think it will be fine for shooting at 500yrds
