i want a good beginner dslr, something that will last me awhile. i have a point/shoot and really enjoy taking pictures with it but i want more control over how the image looks. i am very interested in messing around with f-stops and taking better overall pictures. i can also see myself taking a photography class or two.

I bought the D40x for the same reasons...because I wanted a good beginner dslr. And I think the D40 lives up to that. However, I returned it in 2 weeks because:
    1. There isn't a huge array of AF-S lenses on the market.
    2. No built-in wireless flash.

When I bought the D40x, the price different between that and a D80 was $200. Then I started thinking...I could have spent $80 to buy a wireless flash kit. Then the price between the 2 camera would have been $120. And for $120...I'd rather have access to autofocus of a huger array of lenses. That's when I decided to get the D80. Now I know the D40 is cheaper than the D40x, but it's something to think about. :wavey:

word. i got the d40x as a beginner camera a few months ago and already want to upgrade to the d80. there are small things that annoy me about the d40x. i got it at costco though so i can still return it, which is what im gonna do.
