Just like the title says. The gf might be in the market very soon and I just wanted to know OT's opinion on some of the cars out there. Current interests include Scion TC, Lancer, Civic. Thanks in advance.

She saw those, and we both agree they're hideous.

The honda civic appears to be a solid car if you are looking for economy and reliability.

You say yuck to a TC, Civic, and Lancer but recommend a honda fit?

Anyway, Looking into the Mazda 3, nice little car. Get the S Sport with the 2.3l if you do go Mazda. They come well equipped, look good from the factory, and aren't that cheap feeling. The 2.3l motor has a nice wide power band so while you are only gaining like 5hp peak, throughout the entire RPM range you have a good bit more power than the 2.0.

I forgot all about Mazda! Well right now she's leaning towards buying her mother's car since she knew where it came from. 08 TC, auto, sunroof 18k highway miles for like $12k. I'll tell her to check out mazda as well.

Not a bad choice. The TC is a chick car if I've ever seen one. Just about every girl I know LOVES them.

Back to the Mazda, look at that torque band om nom nom

I have been looking at mazdas myself recently, the 3 and 6 particularly. My gf's dad is a toyota dealer but his company does mazda as well and he says they are reliable altho they dont hold resell value like they should i.e. honda/toyota/lexus.

I was considering a jetta however, he basically scolded me and told me everything that is wrong with VW now that they are made in mexico and not germany (at least the ones sold in the US). Some of this I knew myself from research but all of the electrical problems that the 09's are having now as well as other crap I think I am going to avoid those. I am coming off of a Jeep Grand Cherokee and for anyone that knows those, the main issue for me is getting a reliable car that I dont have to take into the shop...

I definitely think the mazda 3 grand touring is pretty sweet car and is what I am leaning towards at the moment. I just wish they were AWD like a subaru but i am 6'2" and couldnt stand to drive a subaru long distance. I haven't sat in a mazda but have heard they are roomier, am going to test drive one in the coming week.

They are roomy in the front seat. If the driver isn't too tall two full sized adults can fit in back with out much hassle, 3 if you squeeze. One of my good friends has a Mazda 3 and we cram that car full of people all the time.:hsd:

I like the practicality of the Kia Soul, Nissan Cube, and Scion xB in that range.

Most dealers have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to what car is best, they are indoctrinated and are just passing on information they have heard.

^ yea i can see that which is why I did research to back up what he said about VW's. They seem to be built really well but just have a lot of mechanical/electrical problems all of the time (many threads in forums about this). As far as me looking at mazdas and toyotas obviously him getting me a nice price is an important part of it but its mostly because they are known as pretty dependable brands.

Only issue for me is that to get a nicely loaded Mazda 3 would be 25ish and the 6 would be 30 or so MSRP-wise anyway. If I was going to spend around that much I think I would be better off getting some certified used car that is a couple years old and getting more car for less money...

That is very nice to hear. I am also assuming the hatch and the 4 door have the same interior space. Does the rear seat fold down in sections or is it all one piece. Like can I fold the left side down for skis or something and have someone in the seat behind the passenger?

    Subarus are shit nowadays.

    Mazda, Civic, or VW.

Civic will have the best resale value.

I just bought a Civic and so car I am loving it. Handles great in the rain, decent pickup, plenty of room, and great gas.
