If you're going to be mass distributing e-mails, you don't need a program, what you need is an email service provider. Most aren't cheap and they're quite costly. Basic HTML and CSS? Actually, you shouldn't use any CSS at all.

    Research the following:
    1. Can-Spam compliance
    2. Technical capabilities of web-based e-mail and e-mail clients (outlook,macmail,hotmail,gmail,fedora, etc)
    3. Learn spam assassin, it's triggers, and it's ranking system.
    4. Create your HTML based emails using knowledge from steps 1-3 to create a low spam ranking, legal, technically compatible HTML based e-mail.

Actually for best results you dont even want to use html.

Plain text is the way to go :o

Most of our leads come from campaigns which are sent with just plaintext.

But now i usually just do it in HTML and PLAINTEXT just incase their email program doesnt support html.

Depends on the market, man. Plain text just won't work for some industries.

to be honest all the software packages or online services for email marketing are rubbish, and not really worth the investment.

a email marketing company is the way to go (obviously depending on the site of the recipient list).

Deliverability is a huge part of email marketing and those sorts of software/online packages don't really give you the reporting you need to see if your campaign is effective. Whilst the give you a brief rundown of bounces etc, they don't really go into the nitty gritty of things.

there are plenty of companies around that can offer pretty customized services for not a overly extravagant price.

for example check out http://eservices.com.au/ yes this is a aussie site but there are plenty of them around the world :)
