Walk into the gym and look at the people who lift there. If those are the types of people you want to become then sign up. Otherwise find another gym.

Find a gym that is convenient with your work/school schedule. Who cares who is lifting what or what they look like. You aren't there for them. If you want a 24hour membership then get the all club so you can go anywhere. I have a corporate account and pay $34/month, no contract and no initiation fee. Don't let them fuck you with personal training sessions and if the initiation fee is to high then walk away. Let them earn your business.

I had a buddy who REFUSED to pay LA Fitness $150 to start. He left and they called him twice in the same day and eventually gave him the "student" initiation of $50 plus first/last.

I got them to waive the initiation fee. All I had to do was tell them I was getting a better deal at another gym and their offer didn't interest me enough to switch.

Yep, just lie when you sign up. When I signed up my wife at Gold's they wanted a 50.00 dollar sign up fee. I told them I'd come back at payday (which I actually was going to do) but I came to the gym for myself the next day and he asked if I was going to "sign up my woman" I told him I still didn't have any money so he just did it for no sign up fee that day.
