So my cousin is looking to build a gaming PC for $1k. This includes the case and everything in it, no monitor.

Any recommendations? I haven't done research on this in about two years and I need to help him out because he doesn't know much about this stuff. Going to do some research myself right now as well. :hs:

By the way, he plays WoW and is going to get Aion so he's into MMOs but I'm sure he'll play other games as well when he has a capable PC. Right now he just plays 360 because he's on a weaker laptop. :hs:

just did an online build for a guy in the main forum a core i5 rig for $950 with a huge PSU and 4890.

With less expensive ram, a smaller (sub 850w) PSU and cheaper GPU, your talking 850 or so.

Basically, take a Q9550, add speed and then give it hyperthreading. Proceed to own benchmarks.

That sums up the i7 line.

Is i7 worth it, or is the Q series better for gaming?

i7s dont have much improvement over any of the later Q series because games arent really coded for mutliple threads.....yet.

Encoding movies, however, the i7 pwns all. I had my phenom II up to 3.4ghz and it could only keep pace with the lowliest of i7s.
