I use iGrabNews for a newsgroup reader, and Xfactor for P2P

I use Poisoned for my P2P:

    http://www.gottsilla.net

It is able to use the Gnutella (Limewire), FastTrack (Grokster, iMesh, Kazaa), OpenFT (Poisoned, K-Lite), and Ares protocols.

SOME software writers like to make money.

That said, Unison isn't that great and it doesn't perform well when a couple hundred thousand articles are loaded.

iGrabNews works, but that's about it. Navigating the UI doesn't feel natural, no threaded reading (that I could find). But on the other hand, it's fast and free. *shrug*.
