i was in ur shoes exactly, last week. i decided on this external HD , 1 TB

    http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=205761523

i plugged it into my airport extreme and it works great, although a bit slow through the wireless. My initial system back ups i did through firewire and now just do the daily back ups through wireless. firewire is fast as hell

Nice, I was even looking at that one.
I think i'm going to pull the trigger on it.

I just bought an older iBook from another member on the forum, using it for school and shit like that. 12 inch, 1.33ghz, 100gb hd, 1.5gb of mem, and a superdrive. Should be decent.

severedties and in So Cal... name come from the truck/car club by chance?

    fw is much faster
so it depends on what you're using it for. I have 5 mybooks, all different ones :o 2 are usb, one is fw800, one fw400/esata, and one gigabit ethernet

I would just be using it with Time Machine to back up my Macbook.

I use a lacie drive for my time machine and basic backups. Need some more externals to back up my other drives.

Avoid Maxtor and LaCie (LaCie more so) like the plague unless you don't care about data loss. Highest failure rates around.
