    Generally the most common are:
    • Seagate
    • Western Digital
    • Hitachi
    • Iomega
    • Maxtor
    • LaCie
They all come with warranty, usually minimum 2yrs but some are 3yrs

External Hard Drives, obviously require casing, and that's what most look at when deciding on purchasing. Things like:
    • Ventilation
    • Power Switch
    • Size and Stand
    • Color and Shape
    • Power requirements (external power adapter)
    • Connection:
      • eSATA
      • FireWire
      • USB
      • Ethernet
What one are you interested in?

That's really just having bad luck, because those are the two best drives.

:werd: I have two WD Mybooks that I've had for a few years now, still no problems with them. I also have one of the little WD Passports which has been in my backpack for 2 years or so, no problems with that one either :dunno:

For non-enterprise drives, get a WD

Summary of a conversion I had with the product manager for drives where I work (computer storage OEM provider)

WD black drive in most any enclosure will work fine

i use only WD green and black drives since i had such trouble with seagate and hitachi drives. however i'm having issues with my 1.5tb WD drive...so there is really no manufacturer that is perfect. they have to balance between speed/cost/reliability

i just take bare drives and put them an esata connected dock and do my backup. when i'm done, i'll put them back in the plastic shells and shelve them

Sweet guys thanks. WD it is. I have the WD media player and I really like it. It's a handy little thing that saves wires runnin from my computer but I had no idea what their externals were like.

My WD MyBook did an Iraq rotation and several trips in a backpack. Runs like a charm (backed up of course).

Yeah, the first batches of the WD 1.5 TB had a lot of issues. I don't know if they fixed it since, but WD dropped the ball there.

I've had a WD 750 gig external for about a year and a half now and so far no problems. Just wishing it was faster.... :(
