I am looking to buy a nice DL DF DVD Burner (16x). I have looked at the Lite ON 1653S (although I can't find it for sale anywhere yet) and the Sony DRU-710A. The Lite on is a faster burner, and I believe they are good drives but wonder if anyone has had any experience with them (and where I can get one) Any thoughts on these or another burner? :)

nec 3500a or pioneer 108, best 2 on the market right now

the NEC 3500a is the same speed as the pioneer 108 at burning dvd formats (fastest 2 commercial drives on the market) but the NEC 3500a burns CD's faster than the 108....

for that reason, the NEC 3500a is the best drive on the market, imho.

except if it's your only drive in your system. the dvd reader is HORRIBLE, which is a known issue. it takes forever to rip a dvd.

running a pioneer A08 (similar to the 108) and runs pretty well, the biggest problem i have is finding media that can handle the speeds my drive can do :)

i think 8x is currently the fastest that's commercially avaiable right now. check out taiyo yuden, even though it's rated at 8x, people have reported being able to burn at 12 or even 16 in some cases. plus it's one of the highest quality media you can buy. you pay for it though

I have another DVD ROM for ripping :) I have read several reviews on several burners (108, 3500, the sony and lite on I mentioned, and the tdk 1616n (which is essentially the NEC), and can't decide on one, quality is the biggest issue though.

I recommend the NEC-ND3500A as well, excellent drive, not a single coaster yet.

Quick question for you NEC users.... what OS? I am running XP Pro SP2 and want to make sure SP2 will not give me any issues.
