I'm interested in getting a camera. Got about $500 to spend so what would be a good buy and why? I've never owned one before so any advice would be helpful.

G9 or S5 IS, depending on your size preference. You'd have to go a few hundred more to get into DSLR territory.

    Small size SD850 or SD870is
    Larger size G9 is good
DSLR is going to be possible used D70 D50 and a kit lens.

look for a used Dslr if thats what you are aiming for in the end. Settling for a new P&S may be a disappointment if you were really lookinf for an slr.
