What's the best freeware program out there for converting AVI audio to MP3? I usually use VirtualDub to extract the WAV, but it won't let me open the AVI since it's audio only.

What if the file isn't really an AVI?
What if it's only named that way?

When you play it in WMP, right-click on it's name in the playlist and select Properties and you'll get some details that way.

it was originally an embedded flash file. I downloaded the flv and ripped it to AVI using Riva VX. It's an AVI file as far as I can tell, just no video stream. There's probably some way to do it using GraphEdit, but that shit is just too confusing for me.

I'll repeat the question (more or less a question before)....
When you play it in WMP, right-click on the name in the playlist and select Properties; what does it say for the audio?

mplayer can do it, it won't give you a snazzy GUI for something like this though.

Run it with '-ao pcm c:\path\to\file.avi' (the path to the file can be to the FLV either afaik), then as it plays the video the audio will be dumped to a file called 'audiodump.wav' in the current directory (where that might be from the run box on windows, I've no idea...).

    <3 mplayer

Thanks, I'll give it a shot, though all that source crap is giving me a headache. If it's not an AVI, I'm stumped as to what it is.

Hmm? You shouldn't need to know any of this... If mplayer can play the file (it probably can), it can output the audio.
