Some of us still use dial up, I need to get a new 56k modem eventually, but theres a lot of them now days I havent bought one in 5 years. Looking for one that just serves its purpose I dont need a 100$ modem, but one that is compatible with Redhat. my sys is dual booted with windows and linux :) Whats the best kind to get?

Safest is probably US Robotics or 3Com, as they're pretty old and pretty standard, sure to be supported by Linux.

I currently do support for DSL/Dialup at the phone company.
In taking hundreds of modem issue calls per day I can honestly say there is no modem without its fair share of issues.

Even those people will tell you to stay away from I've seen work better then the best they say to use. I however can make those assesments because of what I do..

However I will agree to go with a USR.

i have had a USR for years, and never had any serious problems with it, even on multiple computers and ISPs

I'm pretty sure it supports WinModems, I think I saw something about setting them up during my install. What IS a WinModem exactly?

Here at Officemax, we just got in some USB 56K Modems, anyone ever use one of these? It is supported by the Linux Kernel 2.4.xx and even says so on the box.

USR doesn't just make WinModems.. that's their "economical" version, but they have beter versions.
