I have basically no knowledge what-so-ever about this field at the moment. I'm looking to learn, though. So far, here's what I have been looking at:

    Maya
    3DS Max
    Lightwave 3D
    Cinema 4D

Which one should I go with? I figure it's going to take a while to learn and a shit ton of work. I may as well learn the best. Any opinions?

if you plan on doing games and levels - 3dstudio
if you plan on commercials and stuff - maya

in all honesty, it doesn't matter what you go with, if you can learn one, you can transition to another quickly...

Are you trying to learn these on your own? Or are you going to some school for this. I would imagine if you are attending a formal school, they would tell you what program/s you would need. My brother graduated from one of the Art Institutes, and he used Maya and 3DStudio, maybe others too.

Learning on my own. I'll be making cartoon/scenes. Maybe even some special effects type stuff.

Well sounds like you're doing this as a hobby. I don't see how any company would hire you without any formal training/experience. In that case, just pick one and have at it. There are plenty of short tutorials on youtube and other places where they show you the basics.

I'm guessing you're gonna pirate a copy too. If you do start making money off a program, just make sure you purchase a license.

My brother uses MilkShape for 3D modeling. It's a good basic program, he's done some professional-grade shit with it, even if it did take a while.
