What would you guys say it is? I've got some Wolf and some other stuff for plinking, pretty much all I do with the ar, but I figure it can't hurt to have one or two magazines handy just in case. I'd grab my glock or shotty before even considering the ar, but I guess it would be good for when the zombies finally come.

im gonna go ahead and say you dont need the fancy shmancy hornady TAP or any "extreme shock" mall ninja rounds......it would be safe to assume that a box of Federal/Lake City XM193 or M855 green tip would be more than effective for general applications. Those rounds can be found for between 5-7 dollars a box.
If its good enough to put them down in Iraq its good enough for a home defense gun.

Is that the best there is and it's just ineffective, or should I spend the money for something like TAP?

The ammo oracle is good too but the tactical forums is superior source for terminal ballistics information.

On a side note, why does 5.56 ammo seem to be so hard to find?

probably because tens of thousands of rounds are spent each day by the US military alone, if not more?

The offical US statement on ithe ineffectiveness of the 5.56 was to shoot them twice.. No Joke, read this on a news website..

What they are using in Iraq is not allowed to be hollowpoint, something like its against the Geneva Convention becuase it does to much extra damage. However you can use it for personal defense, so I'd say do it.

the whole point of a rifle round is to cause a fragmentation wound. Hollowpoints work very well in handguns but arent totally necessary in rifles. Plus, ive watched alot of unsettling video clips on youtube and other sites of people getting shot in altercations and unless they were hit in the head they didnt go down with one shot. This includes rifles.

Also take into consideration that alot of the insurgents in iraq are on opiates and as a result its difficult to take them out sans headshot. Weve all heard the stories of PCP-filled crazies whom cops unload their entire mags at, and they dont stop coming. Its all a case-by-case basis. I was at a gunshow last weekend with a vendor who had a huge bandage on his leg. Turns out the night before the gunshow he was bbq'ing with some friends in his backyard and a black thuggish guy climbed over his fence with a 9mm pistol and said he was robbing everybody. Well the guy reached back to "grab his wallet" but had his concealed .45, he shot the guy in the chest once and as the guy dropped his 9mm went off and hit the gunshow guy in the leg. The thug died btw and it was considered justified by the police.

Any bullet will do the job if the shot placement is correct.

Should be able to get 5.56 for cheap in 2007/2008, when the military changes to "green" ammo.

They'll push that deadline back until the war's over, guarantee you.

    Anyway, the best .223 is a .308 :eek5: /OT

It's lead free, environment friendly ammo that the military is supposed to be moving to.
