In a few months I will be turning 21 and I will be getting my CCW. I am looking for something that will be good at the range and good for a concealed carry. I went to two different shops and got these two answers. I wanted a Walther P99 or PPK/S but I was told it would not be good at a range.

WMD crew what should I get?

Um, ignore what people tell you with regards to what is good for a range, just test stuff yourself. Also, it seems to me that if you are looking for something concealed, you are going to want something smaller than a G19

That is what I was thinking about that glock it did seem a little big for concealed. I have never been a big gun person. Most of the shooting I have done has been on other peoples guns. My dad owns Super comanche (45/410) but I use it to kill snakes and other little annoying animals around he house(live close to woods when I lived at home). Now though I am starting to get into the sport but don't have a lot of money to buy several guns for every occasion.

My thoughts have always been if the gun shoots then it's good for the range. If you're trying to get into competition or something like that then you'll need to look for a different gun.

Since you won't be 21 for a couple months, check out the new Walther.

in the hopes of not making a new thread, how does .380 ACP handle as a defensive round? i read an article in guns and ammo (i think thats what it was) about the beretta 84fs. the basic conclusion was ".380 ACP: Why not?" :dunno:

    thoughts from .380 acp owners?

I've owned two .380s. The first was an AMT backup (don't buy one), the second was a Sig P232. I quallified with the Sig for my concealed carry, scoring a 248 out of 250 in 34 degree rainy weather, beat out the other guys with Glocks. I killed a rattlesnake with it once, and a racoon another time. It has less kick than a 9mm, and is almost as useful as a defese round. The only real downside is the cost of ammunition, it is about twice as much as 9mm for less of a round.

If I were to offer you any advice, I would get a Kahr PM9. It costs the same as a Glock, but is much more concealable. Plus you get the benifts of the cheaper, more abundant caliber.

I've shot both, and own the Bersa Thunder, and have shot the Glock 19.

For Concealed Carry, I like the bersa thunder. Its small, concealable, and light weight.

While I love my PM9, I wouldn't consider it a good beginners pistol. It takes a bunch more practice to shoot as acuretly as G19. G19's really aren't too big if you get a good holster. If you like the Glock I'd get that, or even look into the larger Kahrs if the G19 is too big, P9 maybe.

I would much rather hear from an owner of a particular gun, how has the reliability been on the Bersa?

The walther P99 is every bit as good of a gun as a glock. Get the g19 or the 9mm. You'll get cheaper ammo and a more effective round. The bersa is a poor choice to me, its big enough and heavy enough that its not a pocket gun. If you're going to strap something to your belt it might as well be 9mm.

I believe Dr. Roberts is an advocate of .38spl or higher. I can see why you might need the size of something like the p3at but it just doesn't have the juice to penetrate deeply enough and expand.

    P99, Glock, XD, sig, 1911.

if you want something tight (think more accurate) somethinkg like a kimber, para, or kahr would do the trick.

With the appropriate holster/belt rig any of the modern compact 9mm can be concealed easily. You limit the effectiveness of your weapon by going with a pistol chambered in .380. Any pistol is better than no pistol, but I would want at least a 9mm on my side should I ever need it.

If you want a Walther in G19 size, check out the P99c.

I really like the Walther P99 compact. Wish I had one actually.
I also really like my HK P2000sk.

You could have 9mm in the same size package...why would you want something that big and clunky that fires a mediocre round?

Of the two title listed, and against just about anything else for a first gun/only gun, I say G19.

The Bersa .380 sucks ass for a range gun. I can not shoot more than 40 rounds before putting that fucker down.

My roomie owns one. Well, I should say his dad loaned it to him. Anyways, the back bill wacks the lowest knuckle on my thumb, on my shooting hand every time. Or something like that. Cuz it hurts like a bitch.

But, it was reliable and accurate in my short experience with it.

Perfect. I've never had mine jam.

But, you'll have that with the glock too.

The P99 is roughly the same size as a g19, the p99c is roughly the same size as a g26.

Well, when i compared them, i remembered the p99 to be slightly smaller than a g17, but still bigger than the g19.
