I am currently attending MSU-Mankato for a degree in mech. engineering.

I joined the army reserves after my 2nd year of college and now have 5 semesters complete

when I came back from IET, I joined ROTC and this helped to alleviate my financial burden along with TA and the FAFSA benefits, and paid all of my bills during that semester.

Thats great and all, but what about the 18,000 I have in loans prior to joining, if I had stayed enlisted about 12,000 of that would have qualified under my 20,000 student loan repayment program plus I would have received the same benefits as I do now minus the stipend I receive for taking ROTC courses. (I lost the benefit once I contracted to being a cadet)

so my question for you all is who should I take this up with? I know that the program is designed so you can still take out loans and the army doesn't want to give away free money, but there is really no reason to become a cadet if the benefits are actually worse than staying enlisted.

CLIFFS: fuck ROTC and Military benefits, they are too fucked up and have too many stipulations.

fixed. You may still have problems keeping your money, depending on how financially responsible you are.

I was going to say the same thing.

No matter what your job is or how much you make, your work ethic and your spending habits will always follow you wherever you go.

I know about once I commission i'll make decent money, but the job my company I work for now will probably offer me somewhere around 55-60K starting. thats not the point

the point is, the benefit system is flawed, I could stay enlisted and do OCS or direct commission right now and still keep that benefit. Theres no advantage to doing ROTC which is in my opinion a better program.

What about Soldier / Sailor / Airman relief act? Isn't all that debt waived when you join?

I'd just do OCS if you want to keep all those benefits. But if you get a full sholorship with ROTC, that's a lot of money...all my tuition was paid, i got reimbursed like 300% for books, and got like 400 bucks a month for stipend. I also got like a grand every year for uniforms.

No debt is waived. Only interest rate modifications, dropped fees, and any service charges.
