    Hi all,

About three months ago I weighed 250lbs at 6'0". I started eating better and exercising, and now I'm down to 227. I eat no fast food, drink no "regular" soda, don't eat any snacks after dinner, etc. etc. I've been able to break my bad habits with regard to food choice and overeating, and the results have been great.

I've also started working out. I usually ride the recumbent stationary bike for a half hour a day, trying to keep my heart rate above 150 for 20-25 minutes. I also do bicep curls with a 15lb dumbbell, and I do push-ups and crunches.

Since my caloric intake is so low (right around 1200 calories a day), I'm probably not getting enough protein. I'm wondering if there would be any benefit to me taking a protein supplement, or is that exclusively for muscle mass? I'm not too worried about getting 'ripped' or bulking up just yet; I'd like to get down to around 200-205 lbs before doing any serious weightlifting.

I'm also going to start running more often. When I did it before, it left me REALLY sore for a day or two. I got some running shoes (before it was just sneakers that weren't really meant for athletic purposes) so I hope that helps, but I'm wondering if the protein supplement might help that too, which is why I decided to write this post and ask you guys.

Any help could be appreciated. I'm on the right path, I just want to keep going. :wavey:

i would dare to say that at 6ft, and 1200 calories a day, your body is in starvation mode.

dawt. eat more, eat about 10 - 15 cals x body weight. Shoot for 1g of protein per 1 lb of body weight. Yeah it seems odd to eat more to drop the weight, but your starving your body right now and its using muscle mass for energy.

Good for you Ben. Definitely start drinking protein shakes between each of your solid meals. Like was mentioned above, try to get 1 to 1.5 grams of protein for each pound you weigh. So if you're currently at 227, you should be ingesting at least 227 grams of protein a day and no more than 340.

A good protein blend of whey and casein would be perfect for this. Just make sure to buy low carb/low cal protein.

    Question about "starvation mode"..

If your body is in this mode, shouldnt it take the fat stores for energy before taking muscle? According to various websites i dont take in as many calories as i should on a daily basis, but i'm still a fatass.

I'd suggest you go to The Vitamin Shoppe. There are a few locations locally and they have a great selection of your needs.

Hit me up when you want to go and I can go with you and show you what you'll want to get.

Yep...there is. I'd suggest you get a 2lb tub of ON 100 % Gold Standard Whey of whatever flavor you like (Double Chocolate and Rocky Road are pretty good) and a 2lb tub of on 100% Gold Standard Casein (the chocolate is fucking tasty as hell). Call me and I'll explain what you want to do and how and when you'll want to take some.

If u want something high in protein but still cheap, Body Fortress Whey Protein can be bought for $13.99 for 2lbs at most targets. 23g of protein per 30g scoop. tiny bit less than the ON ones but alot cheaper

Muscle is calorie expensive so the body gets rid of the extra drain on its energy resources
