ive been lagging on any strength gains for the last month or two. i was doing 3 reps of 5 sets at 170 and could not really get past it. so today i switched it to 150lb 5x5 and it felt so much better should i see gains in size and strength following this. i think i just needed a change

if you normally go high weight low rep and stop seeing gains i'd say high reps and low weight for a couple weeks might shake things lose for ya sure. also if you usually use barbell benchpress maybe try dumbbell bench for a few weeks instead to activate some diff muscles.

Why not do 5 reps of 170 instead?

It's basically something that'll hold the bar if it drops, i bet you could make some out of wood.
