theres a pretty large man at the gym i go to and every night, hes always working his chest/tris...its like the only muscle groups ive ever seen his exercise ever since the last 2 months. and seen him in 2003 when i was a temporary during summer as well.

dont get me wrong, but he has a fairly large chest and not a man i would tick off. his tris are decently shaped as well... but i could definately tell his lower body/forearms/traps/neck/stomach hasnt seen much exercise. so this man racks up heavy on the flat barbell bench press, like 405lbs. however, when he performs the bench press, he only brings it down like 8" inches to his chest. im thinking, how the hell does a man like this have such huge chest when he doesnt even take the bar down to his chest when doing the bench?

There's a kid around my age at my gym who loads up 225, goes down to 90° and back up, slow and controlled and he's got pretty big tris/chest for 5. I feel like the biggest pansy when I bench on the same day with 185 for 5reps full ROM.

You can use heavier weight for the contraction at the top.

The lower you go the more chest you're going to use.

  9. a really strong guy at my gym told me your arms are supposed to be 90 degrees, not all the way down, becuase with heavy weights it can fuck up your shoulder or some shit?

Personally i like to touch my chest

It depends on how you bench. If you keep your elbows flared out and bench wide its going to take its toll on your shoulders over time.

Tuck your elbows and move your grip closer in.

When is the last time you saw someone bring it to 90 degrees at a competition?

Just because he doesn't complete a ROM doesn't mean he isn't getting any work out of it. A person benching 405 and going to 90 degrees is probably going to have a bigger chest than someone going to their chest with 225. He would most likely get a better workout from going to his chest though. Especially when you consider that at the bottom of the movement is when the chest contributes the most.

FYI its harder to stop the bar with out hitting/bouncing it on the chest then it is to bounce and push.

You can lower it to your chest without bouncing it.

So stop working on the shoulder. I came back from my injury too early. I think I'm going to be out 4-8 weeks. If you don't let it heal it'll keep giving you problems :hs:

A guy at the gym the day before yesterday was so thick (barrel chested and obese) and his arms so short, that his arms would only go to about a 90 degree angle and then the bar would be on his chest.

arm length is different than overall body height.

so by adding more weight and just going halfway down, that would help me build more chest rather than going a little lighter and go all the way down?
