More and more lately I have been thinking it's time for me to pick up my first handgun. I am not a total n00b when it comes to firearms, but I nor does anyone in my family own a gun. I used to have a membership to a indoor range for a year where I would shoot about once every 1-2 weeks with guns I rented from the range and I go shooting with my friends frequently but we're usually shooting their shotguns, AR's, ect. This gun would primarily be kept in my house for home defense and I would eventually like to use it as a CC. What are some guns/calibers I should be looking into and what should I be looking at price wise? New or used? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :wiggle:

go to a range that will let you rent a bunch of handguns. buy the one that feels the best to you (that you can afford).

:dunno: there is no best gun that I think you should own. its whatever you like or dont like

i forgot to mention in my 1st post i've called a few of the local ranges recently and there is only 1 range that will rent you a firearm and it's open really odd hours and isn't very nice. the reason my old range and the others wont is because the range i used to belong to hand someone come in take the test, rent a 45 and put it to his head. so many of the ranges wont rent to anyone unless you come in with a gun

:dunno: go with a friend who owns a gun so you can rent whatever you want? The ranges out here will let you rent if you go with someone, even if the other person doesn't own a firearm, maybe yours will as well. At the very least they should let you handle them to see what fits your hand best which is better than nothing.

The one time I rented a gun, I went to the range alone and they had no problems renting to me. I did come in with a handgun of my own, but they had no specific policies about rentals, evidently...

Most places require you to either be with someone else, or bring your own gun as well.

Probably to prevent the people that come in to commit suicide.

    I have to agree.

If nothing else, you want something that is dead reliable. GLock does this nearly without fault.

You like revolvers/autopistols? like the looks of a certain pistol? Let us know what you've shot and what you've seen and we can try to help

9mm is cheaper than 40 and 45, so it is easier to practice more (if cost is a factor) Also recoil is less, and with good defensive ammo there is only a small difference between the calibers.

I got a Glock 19 for my first handgun

If you're not planning to carry concealed soon, you'd be better served with a shotgun or ar for home defense.

About 6 months ago, I got my first handgun. A S&W M&P 9mm. I got the 9 because of the price for practice ammo....it's about 1/2 as expensive as the .45. I like the M&Ps and I've put about 1,500 rounds through it....haven't been to the range in a long time tho. I really do like it though.

Who knows, maybe this year I'll pick up a 1911?
