I've been thinking about getting certified in some kind of personal training so I can make a few extra bucks on my weekend and get a free gym memebership. The gym I go to lets you pick your days and hours for trainers so that works great for my schedual. My question is, what is the "best" one to get, and what do most places reconize and use. I'm looking at this site:
    http://afpafitness.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_3

Are there any other programs I should look at instead? Maybe cheaper ones? I assume this is all tax deductable (the leasons).

If you are just getting a cert to work in a commercial gym, get the cheapest and easiest one they will allow you to use.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in order to make any money your schedule has to be completely open, you train at the clients desired time, which is usually either at the crack of dawn, or evening to night. Also keep in mind that even though 15-20$ an hour sounds great, you may work 3-4 hours a day, and spend the rest of the time hanging out in the gym trying to hassle people into becoming clients. As christophers said, it's a glorified sales job.

NASM, ACSM, NSCA to name a few, the one you listed is one of the least expensive I have seen.

right on bro I'm trying to get out of this shit. I get on average 25 an hour for sessions and right now get 25-30 a week. Its a pain in the fucking ass to get new clients as well as retaining old ones due to the price.

    Sounds like a plan.

I mean, most trainers I see (especialy at my gym) DO NOT look the part. Most people in there know me already and have already recieved some type of advice (they usually come up and ask) so I think I could actually pull something off.

How much does your gym charge?
And I agree with what everyone else has said so far. I train privately where I charge what I want and keep it all but the hard part there is sometimes finding a place to train them. And if they are hiring you because their doctor told them it helps fight osteoperosis but are only going through the motions, you charge them top dollar or drop them.
And something to consider if you train privately is to hire your own salesperson. Either train them for free or give them a small cut. Rather than being the one given the samll cut.

At a commercial level, looks will give you an advantage when it comes to sales. At a professional level they mean nothing.

    My gym charges in packages
    5 sessions 329
    10 619
    20 1119
    28 1499
So as you can see the average is around 60 per session. I have been doing this bc I have yet to find a good management job :(

I personally know a few trainers that make 40-100k per year. A guy i'm going to work for made 45 k last year training part time but he owns his own training business and a gym doesn't get a cut.

Besides I chose to becoem an engineer cause I liek numbers/problems, not for the pay or the job security.

I make great money, I dont need the job for anything other than just a couple extra bucks on the side and a free gym membership. Also, I'l like another piece of paper to put on my resume, even it it has nothing to do with my field of work.

I made $70k last year dealing blackjack, and have $29.4k this year already. The money at my work is great but I fucking hate the job and was trying to think of something new :wtc: Wife will have her bachelors in nursing next year and will be making a good 50k starting, I cant fucking wait cause then I'll be able to either finish my schooling or do something else. I've also been thinking about the police department, they start at 52k and go up $3,000/year every year. Plus some awsome benefits and pention.
