Not talking about bear hunting here, we're talking you walk around a corner and there's a full-sized grizzly 30 yards away.

Needs to have fast target aquisition, and be ultra-reliable.

What do you think would work well? Pump? Semi-auto? Bolt action? Caliber? Sights?

I usually spend the summers exploring old logging roads in Montana. Looking to invest in a bear gun.

On a sidenote, I saw a show on the travel channel last night about Alaska. There was a guide who would take you hiking to observe kodiak's. While walking back from the trip, they came around a bend and there was a bear on the trail maybe.....30 feet away. This dumbass had a bolt action. Not loaded, with one round in his shirt pocket. The way he "scared" the bear away was by cocking the bolt, and not even actually loading it. The bear sort of meandered off, not really interested. If you ask me, this dumbass is gonna get himself and some hiker's killed like that. If that bear was hungry, they would've been goners.

Yeah, I have a can of bear spray. Not sure I trust my life with it though.

The Alaskan DNR guys use 12 gauge pumps with slugs and .44 mag revolvers. Bear Spray is effective, the biggest problem with it is that people either don't have it readily available (they keep it down in their pack) or just don't know how to use it. There was a story about bear attacks in Field and Stream a couple months ago, one guy didnt pay attention to the wind and not only maced the bear (his friend was being attacked and got a face full too) but also maced himself :o

or maybe a bridman nuke50 (to ensure that the bear is really dead with one hit). dunno whats the price for that gun but its prolly a bit expensive.

That's what Wild West starts with to make their CoPilots. I would opt for their .475 WW Magnum or .50 Alaskan though. :)

    yes, sure.
i think he needs a gun that has a lot of firepower but is nevertheless compact, so a pistol with that caliber will be the best choice.

ok, he doesnt dont need the nuke50 modell, as the bear will not be hard-faced :) but there is also a "normal" .50 pistol available from birdman.

True, but if I were up in Alaska where weather is always an issue, I would cough up the cash for WW's upgrades :) (plus having a takedown function like theirs is nice for storing)

Pistolwise, I like the S&W 500, but their new .460 version looks to be the better choice...

The Smith & Wesson .460 XVR (Extreme Velocity Revolver) is the newest revolver to use the X-Frame. Base on a lengthened .45 Colt case, the .460 Magnum fires a 200 grain bullet at 2,400 feet per second (for 2,557 fpe). The 460 XVR can also fire .454 Casull and .45 Colt ammunition (12M and 8M respectively).

Another vote for the Marlin 45-70.

I've had mine for 5 years now and I love it alot. Managed 2.5" groups at 200 yards and shot my first elk at 170+ yards 2 years ago with this gun.

Recoil isn't all that bad with the thick pad I got on it.

If you really want something that is easy to carry and strictly a defense big game weapon, the Superhawk Alaskan in either .454 or .480 Ruger is a great carry option. But for $700... I rather spend the money on something that isn't more of a novelty.
