Anyone see it on HBO last night????

    Amazing!

Basically, it's a documentary about Iranian men who, because they are gay and could be killed for being gay, decide to become women instead. And Iran is the only country in the world who will change your birth certificate to say that you were born a woman... so you would have the rights of a woman (which, as horrible as those rights are, are better than being gay).

It was such an incredible documentary, watching these men become women just so they wouldn't be harassed daily and so they could get a job.

Makes me so happy I was born in the USA.

There was this one man who was transitioning, and the way he talked about "Western culture" was so... theoretical (if that makes sense)

He was like "I hear in Western countries that men can marry other men or something like that. If we could do that here, I wouldn't get this surgery. I hear it's different in other western countries, but it's God's law and State law that make me do this because of my illness"

Seriously... I was so affected by their perception. They seriously thought that their sexuality was an illness that required this surgery.

exactly. Iran's government is a theocracy. So, all laws are based on the Koran.

And what's so odd is that government officials say that the Koran states that being gay is wrong and a sin. But, the Koran says nothing about changing your state of being (from man to woman), so it's not a sin.

The government says that, since you can make a tree into a table, you're changing God's natural state of the wood. Same with turning a man into a woman. So, since it's not a sin, the government allows it... and even changes their birth certificate.

So fucked up... yet, to them, it makes perfect sense.

So, there's not even a question of leaving the country.

the title of this documentary should be "SOME transsexuals in iran"

it annoys me how broadly they use the whole "omg transsexuals in iran are just scared gay men" when that really isn't the case. there's a lot of criticism over how the whole situation was portrayed. its definitely awful and true that there is a phenomenom of gay men getting sex changes so that they wont be murdered but to scapegoat SRS as the problem instead of the laws was kinda crappy.

Reminds me a little bit of the beginning of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
