My meltsafe adapter melted today. It's a known issue, apparently.
wtf, how did that happen? how "known" is this issue?
I'm not sure. I suppose that over the course of a year the cord was subjected to flexing, bending and flexing at that point. More so than it was designed for, but I haven't abused this cord and I seldom pull on the cord. I would say it's underdesigned. Certainly many cords have more ridid bracing near the ends. Even the larger cord that comes with this adapter is designed that way.
The rep acted like this is common, and said they know about this issue. I would really hate to see somebody get injured because of this.
Wonder if, since it was a known issue, perhaps they reinforced it somehow for the newly redesigned adapter?
It's pretty hard to get injured from 16.5vdc. It's just not enough to push a lethal amount of amps through the resistance of dry (or even moist) skin. Just don't lick it and you'll be fine.
apple needs to stop putting form over function on their magsafe adapters. mine is fine, but I really baby all my equipment. my girlfriend's has some kinks in the cable that won't come out, and she hasn't treated it too unreasonably for that to be the case.
i kinda abuse mine, i have a feeling it will only last maybe another year
the thing that kills me is that i like to sit indian style with my macbook on my lap, naturally i will have it plugged in to charge, and the cord will be resting against my left knee the whole time...thats what will break it eventually
Apple must have sent you the old power cord, the new one "meltsafe" is supposed to be melt proof. Apple had to redesign the power cord due to increasing complaints of the heat produced by the mbp. Consumers were worried that the power cord would melt from the extreme heat produced from the mbp.
Those poor sweatshop workers making defective products.
