What do I get? More battery power and little better handling when I shot horizontal?

190 bucks sounds like a lot of money for one of those.
I never used one though, so please enlighten me if it's really worth it.

I use a XSi with a the 17-50 Tamron lens.

    ergonimically it can't be beat

it's so much more comfortable to shoot with a grip, and it's ergonimically better.

Can't hold my cameras without 'em. And the ones for my cameras, they're more expensive than the canon counterparts.

To me, they are just as important as the lens. Ergonomics are so important.

you guys beat me too it. When you're holding a camera for 8 hours at a wedding, the ergonomics quickly become the most important feature.

Interestingly enough, this is also why I own a Nikon.

    :p

My camera already feels very ergonomic though :dunno:
It's never been uncomfortable carrying it around.

    then don't get it.

    I feel ridiculous without it.

Any camera shops have any bodies at all that have a grip? See how they're different.

It's like being a virgin, you don't know how good it feels until after you use it. Then you don't wanna go back to shooting without a grip.

I like them because I have larger hands, and it gives more area for my palm to rest against it.

They also coincidentally work well for shooting verticals. :)

Battery grips balance the camera a lot better with heavier lenses. I like the solid/stable feel. You don't have to change batteries during a shoot, which is nice. My favorite thing is being able to attach a hand strap.

I have never found any good reason remove any of my grips. Even if I have 2 cameras around my neck or straped to my backpack at the same time.

My experience with the 3rd party grips has been that they are shitty. Get the OEM ones if you want them to feel like an extension of you camera. The shutter button, wheel, etc on the OEM grips feel exactly like the buttons on your camera.
