    Registration opens soon.

    Anyone planning on doing it?

I will be in the HEAVY category, just don't know if it will be individual or a team.

Anyone done it? It is supposed to be brutal.

Competed in the heavy division in 2005. I finished 23rd out of 172 finishers, and the guy I went with finished 1st. Over 200 started in the heavy category. :bigok: I needed some medical attention at mile 12 due to my feet bleeding badly. If I didn't have that 33 minute stop I would have finished top 10 easily. Damn boots.

A pic from the death march, and the damage afterwards.

Start rucking now, get your feet accustomed to the distance. Start out at 6 miles and work your way up to 18. Do not march on concrete unless you have to. Stay on the grass, trails would be ideal. It helps strengthen your legs and ankles, and reduces the pounding on the legs. Boots are subjective, every one wants something different.

Also don't be a pussy and do the new 16 mile course. If you are going to participate, do the 26.2 mile course.

I live in Las Cruces, so the terrain is the same as out in White Sands. I have never hiked in combat boots. I plan to do the full march. I am going to try to get a team together to start hiking uphill in the Organ mountains. I just don't have an ALICE pack or any other military packs. I wonder if I can get one issued for this...

Are you going to come out to the 2008 march?

I would like to but won't be able to due to school. Talk to your 1st Sgt about getting you a MOLLE pack. If he/she is worth his diamond he/she will be more than willing to support you. The ALICE is good for short rucks, like 6 - 9 miles, but anything further and it starts to wear on the upper back and hip region. I have also had a problem with my arms going numb after 12 miles with the ALICE.

You will see soldiers from every country that took part in WWII at the Bataan March. They are there to pay tribute to a group of men that the world has forgotten for the most part. Men that dealt with a grueling forced march, a horrible prison camp, and slave labor in some of the harshest conditions. Walking 26.2 miles isn't a fitting memorial, in my opinion, in comparison to what the real heroes endured, but it is still in memory of their sacrifice.

My experience with both packs = goose egg

I have noticed when I wear my regular back pack, my arms tend to get tingly.

Any more input you have like this will be much appreciated.

    Thanks! :bigthumb:

Some people who participate are old or disabled in some way and they want to participate, but may not be able to do the full marathon.
Civilians are welcome to participate as well.

  15. Do people ruck run? What is the heavy category? like how much weight? I am interested...

    Heavy = 35lbs+

You can ruck run all you want, but when carrying 35lbs+ on your back it gets old after a while.

I did an 18 mile march in Bosnia, after a certain point, distance doesn't matter, but that thing was designed to be uphill both ways.

I don't know how much weight I was carrying, but I had a ruck with mostly socks/tshirts and water, but I also had my M-16 and a few full mags.

    Did it in 5 hours.

I'm sure several of the survivors that show up to it feel it is disrespectful as well.

So I have a couple of guys who want to go, but they do not want to ruck it. Name calling seems to have no effect on their decision.

That's too bad. 35lbs isn't much at all. Granted it more then nothing but if I read right if you don't wear a ruck you are wearing LBE and sorts?

The 35 lbs is a little misleading. It has to weight 35 lbs after removal of consumables, change of socks/t-shirts, and water. My ruck weighed in at 51 lbs at the start. Not a normal combat load weight, but still noticeable after 26 miles. :fawk:
