My first time setting up a BDC. Got it up and running, seems to be working. My question is, what exactly does a BDC do? Does it only function if it detects that the PDC is down? Or does it function in conjunction with the PDC to lessen its load?

if the primary domain controller fails, one of the the BDC's gets promoted to PDC and the PDc should be demoted to BDC. I think it just basically maintains a back up copy of the directory db.

Actually, the BDC will accept requests for logons. The PDC maintains the master database and is responsible for replicating to the BDC's
