I want to replace the head unit and speakers in my 88 M3.

I dont want to go super crazy....aka I dont want to spend a tremendous amount of money. Maybe 300 on the head...and another 300 on speakers. 5.25(i think) up front and 6.5" rears.

I have an unused Pheonix Gold 350 amp...its about 5 or 6 years old....but still in the box, brand new.

Any suggestions? Im not looking for any woofers or anythign in teh trunk just yet.

And the head unit must light up amber....i know some kenwoods and nakamichi's have this.

Any suggestions on what brands/models to look at?

Do I even need to use my amp? Or can a good head unit push enough power to those speakers?

    Thanks

A lot of Clarion head units can change their faceplate color to suit the interior lighting of the car, I'm pretty sure Amber is one of the choices.

And if you're just getting speakers for the time being, check out Bston Acoustics, MB Quart (though that might be getting too pricey for $300 x 4 speakers). What kind of music do you listen to mostly?

If you've got the amp, use it. The HU will be able to drive the speakers decently, but you'll find that with an amp, your speakers will be able to do a whole lot more.

I decided on a nakamichi CD-400(anyone think this is a bad idea?)...i like the plain look :naughty:

    ANOTHER QUESTION

My car has 5.25" speakers all around

Should I go with components all around? Or do I just really need them up front....and maybe two small woofers in the back?

    Or an I a moron?(dont answer that)

    Thanks in advance

Nah, not a moron dude. Nakamichis may have a plain look, but they are very high quality on the inside (where it counts). Good choice!

I would just go with components in the front. You probably won't hear the benefit in the back. Most people just get something for 'rear fill' in the back.

Nice choice on the headunit, the rotary knob and lighting should blend in perfectly.

As for the speakers I would go components up front and regular coaxials in the rear.

I would say that the DSE-213's would do quite nicely up front. They are 199, so just at your price range. I've heard their bigger brothers, the 216, and I was very impressed. They had a nice smooth tone and good midbass, so I would assume nothing less (if just a little less bass due to the cone size) from the 213's. Just one suggestion: You will need to amplify the components with your standalone amp. Drive the rear speakers from your head-unit. You will need as much power as possible to really make MB components perform at their peak.

    Thanks man.

So with the Pheonix Gold 350...i should run it all to just the two front speakers? Thats not too much power?

Or could I just split it off 4 ways and throw to small woofer's in the rear and have it power them also? I might be able to fit some 6.5's in the rear.

don't run any rear speakers... if you spend the money on 1 good set for up-front, it'll be a lot better than two mediocre sets for the front/rear.

Cool beans, thanks for the info.

About the amp..you won't get 13.8 volts from your battery. In all likelihood, it will be closer to 12, so you can expect 38-50 watts RMS x2. Definitely drive the fronts with that.

Nakamichi is a good head unit for classical music and jazz. It has good internal processing. if you listening to a lot of R&B and Hip Hop, i'd suggest Clarion. they're customizable and you'll wanna tune out a lot of the bass fromt he interior speakers and allow more tuning of the highs.

    as for the speakers,
MB quart doesn't produce THAT much bass if you like it, you'll have to make sure you have good placement and can tune well if you want them to sound good.

i don't want to start another rear fill vs. no rear fill. i like it having rear speakers to provide ambience. if you do choose to use rear speakers, use some not-so-great speakers in the back and run them off the head unit. it'll be fine.

    thanks again.

    I understand what youre saying.

What about just runnign some small woofers in the back to get some bass?

And why did the place im having this all installed at say that I cant use my amp for just the front speakers b/c its 4 channel?
