Basic get in shape workout?

    What kind of workout routine can i do, without a gym membership, using no special equipment...but will help me to improve fitness? I was thinking along the lines of running/jogging/walking, situps, pushups, etc...

    What sort of goals should i be setting right off the bat as far as jogging distances, or number of pushups? Is it possible to see an improvement in as little as a couple weeks?

    I'm not talking about building muscle necessarily...just getting in shape.
