    Looks like I'll be with:

    http://public.afca.af.mil/about.htm
AFCA which is based out of Scott AFB

    :wtc:

I'm incredibly pro-2nd amendment and I like to excersize my ability to carry firearms. Illinois is about as unfriendly toward firearms as it gets. :wtc:

I have yet to get the hardcopy of the orders, however I was speaking with my SNCO over the phone, as these just came in today. They(HQ) were going to fax a hardcopy to my Detachment but I guess it didn't get in before 1700.

Anyone been there or know anything about the area?

I know it's HQ AMC, HQ TRANSCOM, and TACC (Tanker Airlift Control Center), so be ready for some bigwigs.

my buddy was there for about 6 months as a brand new butter bar. he loved it - said the area is great and he really enjoyed himself. he also said the CGOC was cool, and he ended up hooking up with a few other LTs and a couple of Captain types through it.

are you going there as a casual or is this your actual assignment?

don't worry too much about the assignment. there's much worse places you could have gotten. besides, it's all about the people. you'll make some good friends and have a blast.

my buddy said joining the CGOC was definitely his best move while he was there. he said the captains were especially horny.

Should I try and live on base, or off? This will be my first assignment. I will be married.

I have a few friends there..

I have heard the base housing is nice, but I would always recommend checking out the local neighborhoods downtown first.

You are going to a very nice; very quiet place. I have never heard anything bad about it.

i'd live off base. does your wife work? if so, i'd try to buy a house and build some equity.

def buy a house you are a new LT and you got the money
base housing always sucks for the most part..though im not sure what hte outside area is like or price of houses are...

check to see what your BAH is going to be and see what most houses in the area are going for

my BAH is going to be 940 a month. Unless there's a lender that will give me a loan with little to no money down for a house, I don't see how I'd be able to afford a home.

The Mrs still has a 2 classes left and an internship to finish for college. Hopefully she can find a paid internship in the area, but yes she should be working, at least some. After about a year, she should have a 'real' job. Maybe if we save all our pennies for a year or two we could get a downpayment for a house... hmm. I still don't know how long I'll be assigned there.

    I have excellent credit.

I don't know about a VA loan or anything. Hopefully I find out about a sponsor soon and they can help me out.

you don't *have* to purchase with a downpayment, although it's usually how it goes. you could finance the entire house....no one way is "better", although obviously you save money on interest with the downpayment.

i just mentioned that because a house is a great investment, a tax break, and, well, it's just nice to have your own place instead of leaping from apartment to apartment like i've been doing. of course, with a wife still in school an apartment might be a smart move to save some money.

what's your career field? chances are you'll do at least 2.5 years at your first base - probably closer to 3. when you first arrive at the base, expect to get about a week or two to find a place to live, get settled, and check in with the various base agencies. expect to go to ASBC soon after you get there, then probably head off to your tech school, then back to scott to work for a few years. at least that's how it happened with my friends.

if you are interested in VA loans or buying a house, head by your base family services center (they'll probably come talk to you anyway during your in-processing). they can help you do stuff like that.

i'm not sure what the situation with comm tech school is since keesler took a massive hit from katrina, but most of my friends went to their permanent station first, then TDY'd out to their schools. of course, everyone's experiences are different.

if you have any questions regarding active duty life just ask - i know i was really lost for the first couple weeks (hell, months) i was in. are you coming from ROTC or the academy? either way you can expect your workplace to be really chill. my buddy was a casual with the aeromedical squadron out at scott and said he called the captains by their first names.

    Geez.

I'm getting married Dec 31st. So much for a honeymoon.

I'm coming from ROTC, however I'm a 3rd gen military brat, so I know the general atmosphere.

i let my mpf know and htey changed around the paper work.. you should get orders rightbefore you leave
you need to do some shit first

on a side note, why is everyone getting married? i don't get it, did i miss the memo that said you had to get married right out of college? i've been extremely surprised through my 2.5 years so far, it seems like every class i start and every base i go to all the young guys are married. in my current class of 12, only 3 of us are not married or seriously involved with someone. christ, doesn't anyone want to have a bachelorhood anymore?
