I guess it wasn't so bad until he fucked up.

I had a friend I met at college about 7 years ago. He was one of those certified microsoft administrators or whatever you want to call it. Knew his shit in his field, had a lot of experience, worked at a lot of reputable firms. Fast forward a couple years later...

I started a web design and development firm and he started a hosting firm. He had clients that needed websites and my clients needed a place to host their website. I've never really liked the thought of hosting because of the support role, prior to creating this company, I was a systems administrator. He's been hosting a particular client of mine for about three years. All has been well until about a month ago.

The client contacted me telling me they haven't been able to access their website. I did some research and it turns out that my friends server went to shit and all of his customers sites were offline as well as his own. I tried contacting him during this problem but his cellphone is out, he's no on AIM or gmail, and I can't email him because his server is down. I couldn't make contact with him at all. The client asked me if I could host their website (apparently, since the staging server has more uptime than the live server, lol.) since I'm usually the one always rescuing them from their immediate issues. I told them I'd come up with a temporary solution since I'm not really in the hosting business. The insisted that I host them and they'd rather start using me for ALL of their web and hosting work. I caved in and agreed.

I started hosting them on my own VPS, which I really don't like the idea of, and I'm in the process of getting a dedicated over at The Planet because of it. At this point it'll be more loss over profit though. So, I'm thinking about actually going back to my older clients and selling them into a hosting plan so I wouldn't have loss. I'm not too sure if I'm comfortable with this. Time to open up a few of my old administrator books. :noes:

Anyway, I restored their website using the copy from the staging server, the only problem was that obviously the staging server did not have a replicated database of the live server. So, the client lost a lot of data. During the time of relaunching their website onto a hopefully more reliable web server :mamoru2: my buddies cellphone came back on, he was back online, and I was able to talk to him. He said he was getting out of the hosting business because he lost all of his clients during the time his server was out due to some issue with his provider. He wouldn't tell me what it was. I asked for a dump of my clients database so I can restore. He said he'd be able to. A couple days later I talked to my client and my client mentioned to him that I will now be hosting their website. I think my friend is a bit bitter about this and I don't think he will be giving me the sql dump now. I've been asking him for two weeks and now he is super short with me.

For some humor now, rewind a couple weeks ago when I was trying to obtain the dump from him, I brought up world of warcraft, because during a show we went to last year that was all he talked about. It turns out he was really sucked into the game and he couldn't give me the DB backup at that point because he was too busy working on his "tank". :hsugh: Btw, he's jobless now. So basically, he stays at home playing warcraft all day I think.

I kind of feel like a huge douche because I feel like I "stole" my friends business. But I didn't do it intentionally. It was his problem the server went down. I guess I won't be hanging out with him anytime soon. :hs:

That's actually kind of sad how that game can overtake someone's willpower. This isn't the first example I've heard of that game owning people's productivity. Kingtoad for president.

If you have the money just expand your business and hire someone to run web hosting for you.

Sucks what he did though :/

You didn't "steal" his customers, you picked up his slack.
