I use BackupMyPC. Its Veritas's desktop software and has the same UI that I've seen on Colorado/Seagate/Veritas/Microsoft backup software forever. I use it to backup to DVD-R's but it will work with almost anything. For my external hard disk, I actually just a batch file with a single xcopy command with lots of switches. There's nothing like having a backup of all of your stuff that can be read natively by Windows without any special software drivers. The only downside is that its not a bootable image copy.

if i were to just do a file backup, i'd do a briefcase in windows and have it synchronize. but what i want is to have a copy that completely restores the state of my c: assuming the disk crashes
