Mac OSX does not recognize it when it's plugged in, they apparently tried a dozen times to recover, every time it would stop and freeze after a small portion was recovered. So, the shop sent it to LaCie, they called me and said the actual drive is done. Corrupted or something. They said they can send it to this place who can take out the "plackard" or something? And read it in another machine, but that 900-2800 was the quote I got back from them. It's the kinda situation where I NEED the data, I just don't know how I'll pay for it if it's on the upper end of that scale :hsd:

they are pulling the platters out. it takes a clean room and another identical drive. basically the hardware completely failed, now the only hope is that the actual media inside the hd still contains the data. they pull the "platters" (the actual spinning media that holds the data) out and put them into the working hd then hopefully the new hd will read them. my uncle has done similar operations in his apt just to recover the data and then plan on trashing the drive afterwards, so you don't always have to pay the outrageous fees to do this, but unless your really good with mechanics and small electrical components i wouldn't try it yourself.

    you didn't have any backups?

jesus christ dude, a 1tb external is under 100 and throw in in a safety deposit box or at a neighbors/family's house

:werd: if you are using an external, buy 2 of them and keep the same data on both.

I know. I had my other drive backed up, just not this one :wtc:

Irresponsible, guess I learned my lesson :o

Hard to spend ~200 on a drive that you don't really use, when that's almost 25% of your paycheque, :wtc:

I just backed up my stuff again last night to external. I have my OS drive backed up to one external with time machine Then I have my 1.5tb storage backed up to one 1.5tb external storage. The 1.5tb external is backed up every time something is added and then I shut off the drive and unplug it. I'm paranoid.

:o i'll hook anyone that needs it up with some good recovery software, but the software working is dependent on the physical hard drive still working.
