So, I reformatted my computer, but before I did I backed up most of my music collection on to dvds. I loaded the music back on my computer, and now I can only get about half of the music to work. Is there anything I can do or am I fucked?

How did you backup your files? using windows backup utility, tar or just burn ISO CDs?

Did you use a generic POS DVD + or - R media?
If so, integrity of data may not be that great. You can use Nero Drivespeed to force the read speed down and/or try a different DVD drive. Try it in the actual drive you wrote the disc with.

This is the exact reason I ordered $300 magneto-optical drive. It's slow (8x CD-R comparable maybe?) but it has got the legendary reliability

I really need to start backing up my stuff. My music is all on my MP3 player, but my data isn't being backed up at the moment.

Fortunately, MO up to 640MB is ISO standard, so it is probably here for good.

Unlike ZIP, Syquest, crap, MO can not break from a drive failure. DVD and CD media are on price war and quality is always on the edge.

    Therefore, MO>*
