My carry gun is also my competition gun, and I carry with one in the pipe. So, when I want to dry fire practice I clear it. When I'm done I insert a mag and chamber a round and put it back in my carry holster.

Whats the best scheme to avoid constantly rechambering the same round of my carry ammo? I'd like to say: manually load chamber, drop slide, insert mag, but that is hard on the extractor.

I'm sure the best way is too shoot it up, but I'm not wild about the idea of replacing my carry ammo on a monthly basis just because I dry fire a lot.

Use a couple small containers to keep track of the rounds, chamber them 3 times before shooting them. 30 rounds should last you 3 months, that seems ok.

I just take the mag out, clear the round in the chamber, dry fire to my heart's content, lock slide open, insert round back in, insert mag.

Pretty much what you said you didn't want to do... but it works and I've never had a problem.

Now if I'm worried about cycling through my man-stoppers, I take the mag out, along with chambered round, unload all rounds in the mag, and then reload them back in. In a different order than they were in.

I just shoot the first 2 rounds every 10 cycles, since the one in the chamber, and the first round in the mag have been going back and forth.

That's a good way to break your extractor

So don't insert round in the chamber and then close slide? It's never cause me any problems before.
So you're saying insert mag first and let the slide closing insert the round into the chamber on its own?

yup. Forcing the extractor to bend over the rim of an already chambered cartridge is undue stress.
From the mag, though, the rim pops up under the extractor and doesn't stress it nearly as hard.
So if you +1 load, insert mag, close slide, remove mag, top off, reinsert mag.

Yeah man, when you actually look at the action, the round is pushed up and under the extractor hook. The hook doesn't snap over it.

When I load, I put in a full mag, let it go into battery, drop mag, top off.

Just seems like more extra work. Well... it is, but sounds worth it since I certainly don't want to be breaking anything.

I almost always use the slide stop to drop the slide.

Yeah it sucks doesn't it. I'm sort of in the same boat. I don't want to work shitty security jobs my whole life.
Crappy hours, work weekends and holidays. Away from the family a lot.
    Swing shifts. Blah.
