I just got the new computer together yesterday and everything is going fine, until i try to playback an avi. In windows media player, it's extremely dark, still visible, but essentially unwatchable.

I downloaded the divx player/codec from divx.com and restarted the computer. Video played fine in Divx's player. Double clicked a different avi out of habit and launched a windows media player to play the file back. It's real dark again, exactly the same as before. I open divx to try to get it to play in that, and i get an error that divx player can't run. Now it won't open Divx.

Restart the computer, do the same things over (new .avi files), and the same problem persists. They all seem to play fine in Divx's player, but as soon as windows media player gets a hold of them, it's game over.

Download windows media player 10: same problem. same problem in WMP w/ a .wma now as well.

    Any ideas?

I've never heard of that, but download Klite codec pack (I use 2.80).

It comes with media player classic, will play every file,
and if it still does that then it's a setting somewhere else on your pc.

Also, are you using a monitor you had on another build? If so, you might just need to adjust the contrast/brightness.

I'll try that. I'm thinking it's some sort of codec problem, as everything else runs fine, from quicktime movies, to the desktop, to games (HL2, etc), even after the freak out.

Yea, i'm using the same monitor. I don't know what would cause only video, and only after using WMP9+, to sketch out like that on the monitor. :(

My thinking was that if you had your monitor settings somewhat low,
and you ran into a video file that was somewhat low, it might seem like
    it was suddenly too dark.

Yea, my first thought was that it was the video itself, but it happened to a few, all from different sources.
